Is the Volkswagen Golf a reliable car for long distance travel?

I am considering purchasing a Volkswagen Golf for my daily commute and regular long distance travel. I have heard mixed reviews about its reliability and was wondering if anyone has experience with this specific model. Would appreciate any insight or advice.
