Which generation of the Volkswagen Golf is the most reliable?

I'm in the market for a used Volkswagen Golf, but I'm not sure which generation has the best reputation for reliability. Can anyone offer any insight?

I've owned the third generation Golf for years and have had very few issues with it. I highly recommend it.

I've heard good things about the fifth generation Golf, but have no personal experience with it. I would recommend doing some online research and reading reviews before making a decision.

I used to own a fourth generation Golf and it gave me a lot of problems. I would steer clear of that one.
