Why does my Volkswagen Passat's engine make a knocking noise?

I have a 2015 Volkswagen Passat and recently I have noticed a knocking noise coming from the engine. It usually happens when I accelerate or when the car is idling. I'm not sure what could be causing this, should I be worried?
